Palace Lectures: Ale and the Alehouse in the late Middle Ages

Ale and the Alehouse in the late Middle Ages

Tuesday 17th June 6PM-7PM, Gates open 5.45PM

Adult - £5   Student - £4   Member/Friend - Free

Why was Samuel Peyps always drunk? And why did a devout puritan give ale to his horse? These and other questions will be answered in this talk, which takes a look at the place of alcohol in everyday life at a time when the Alehouse vied for importance with the parish church. How much did people drink, where did they drink it, and what were they drinking? We’ll explore the difference between an alehouse, an inn, and a tavern, as well as explaining the difference between ale and beer, and considering whether everyone in the Westcountry was devoted to cider!

Dr. Richard Stone is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Bristol. He specialises in the history and legacy of slavery, but also fun things such as pubs and pirates!

The Palace Lectures are a series of talks across the year. Covering an assortment of intriguing and interesting topics the talks are delivered by historians, gardeners and subject experts.
