Thursday 20th March 6PM-7PM, Gates open 5.45PM
Adult - £5 Student - £4 Member/Friend - Free
Throughout the high middle-ages, the longbow in England and Wales changed the makeup of armies and society alike. Illustrated with many props and accurate reconstructions, insight will be given into the equipment, training and life of the medieval archer, and their devastating impact during the famous Battle of Agincourt.
Neil Eddiford has been working as a lecturer and historical interpreter for more than three decades, demonstrating historic archery and fletching (arrow making), and has provided experimental archaeology for Bristol University and various television programs, including Channel 4's Time Team. Palace Lecture - Fencers and Fight Books: The History of Fencing in the 15th to 17th Centuries
Thursday 10th April 6PM-7PM, Gates open 5.45PM
Adult - £5 Student - £4 Member/Friend - Free
Throughout the medieval and early modern period, fencing and the study of arms was considered one of the hallmarks of noble and princely activity. Much of what is known about fencing at this time is captured in 'fightbooks', treatises written by fencing masters and which often contained beautiful pictures of martial techniques. In this talk, Dr Rob Runacres will discuss the development of fencing in the period as illustrated by the extensive fightbook literature.
Rob Runacres is a historian and fencing instructor, specialising in the history of Italian fencing masters and princely education. He is the founder of the Renaissance Sword Club, where he teaches rapier and associated sword forms. Several of his fightbook translations have been published and he regularly gives talks on early modern martial arts.

Twelfth Night- Outdoor Theatre
Sunday 20th July
Gates open 5.30pm Show 6.30pm-8.45pm
Adults £18.00 Children £12.00 Family 2+2 £50
Join The Lord Chamberlain’s Men this summer, in their 21st
year, for Shakespeare’s greatest romantic comedy, Twelfth
Night. With a history stretching back to William Shakespeare’s
original company, they present this joyous play as he first saw
it – in the open air, with an all male cast and Elizabethan
costumes, music and dance.
“If music be the food of love play on!”
Orsino, Duke of Illyria, is desperately in love with Countess
Olivia. But she, in mourning for her brother, has sworn off all
men. Suddenly Viola, separated from her twin brother in a
shipwreck and now disguised as a man, enters Orsino’s court as
his servant and turns everyone’s world upside down. Sent to
woo Olivia on Orsino’s behalf, Viola is stunned to find herself
the object of Olivia’s affections and, as Olivia falls in love with
Viola, so Viola falls in love with Orsino.
“O time, thou must untangle this, not I.
It is too hard a knot for me to untie.”
Romantic confusion, mistaken identity, practical jokes and
riotous disorder abounds in Shakespeare’s hilarious and lyrical
romantic comedy about love, its many and glorious facets, and
the mess it can make of us all.
“Nothing that is so, is so.”
Bring a chair and a picnic and prepare to be entertained and
transported. Book early to avoid missing out!

Palace Lecture: Recreating Roman and Saxon buildings at Avalon Archaeology
Thursday 3rd July 6PM-7PM, Gates open 5.45PM
Adult - £5 Student - £4 Member/Friend - Free
At the Avalon Archaeology site near Glastonbury recreations have been made of buildings from different periods. These include a Saxon longhall based on one from Cheddar, that was probably owned by King Alfred, and a winter dining room of a typical Roman villa from Somerset with mosaic floor, frescoes and working hypocaust. Join Dr Richard Brunning for a talk showing how the reconstructions required the use a wide range of information from archaeology, literature, history and art together with some informed guesswork to complete the challenge.
Dr Brunning is the Senior Historic Environment Office and Archaeologist at South West Heritage Trust, and took the lead on the brilliant Avalon Archaeology Project.

The Most Perilous Comedie of Elizabeth I
Wednesday 13th August Gates open 6.15pm Show 7pm-9pm
Adults £20 - Friends of the Palace £15 - Children £ 12 - Family (2A+2C) £58
The Three Inch Fools present a largely historical, always hysterical, brand new Tudor comedie.
Elizabethan theatre is flourishing. But will a brand-new Tudor musical romp, in which Good Queen Bess takes to the stage herself, be the making of this heroine or spell the beginning of her downfall?
The stage is set for regicidal rivalries, devious dramatics, and plotting playwrights. Beset by misunderstandings and a script that…let’s just say…needs some work, this production promises to be largely historical, always hysterical.
As the old saying goes…thy show must go-eth on!
